In a previous post, I mentioned a document that I had edited that used EndNote, which, the authors had confidently reassured me, meant that the references would cause me no problems, and it turned out, to no one's surprise, that a few issues had cropped up. This post describes one of the issues – and it was one that I hadn't anticipated.

I talked about some of the common issues in EndNote that can lead to the reference list not being styled quite correctly in this post: EndNote: What to watch out for when you're editing. Another thing to check in your EndNote reference list is that all the journal names are abbreviated correctly, or not abbreviated at all, as this is something that can go wrong.
"You shouldn't have any problems with the references – we used EndNote" This was the slightly optimistic comment that arrived with a large document that had, indeed, been referenced using EndNote. Now, although using EndNote for references does have many benefits, you won't be surprised to know that there are a variety of ways that errors can creep in. I'm going to tell you about some of the common problems that I've come across.
Have you ever been sent a document where the author has used EndNote to add the references and you're not sure where to start? Here are a few tips to get you going.
EndNote is a reference management system that help you to organize and manage bibliographies and references to use in journal articles, theses and other documents that use references. It helps users collect, store and format references and citations in various styles.
In the journal articles or academic papers that I edit in Word, I sometimes have to renumber Vancouver-style references that are out of sequence in the text for one reason or another and consequently need to be renumbered. This task can’t be automated fully, but having a renumbering system in place, and reducing the amount of typing you have to do, will make the process less painful and error prone.
